India has taken a historic step towards sustainable transportation with the launch of its first Hydrogen Train on the Jind–Gohana–Sonipat route in Haryana. This 89-km pilot isn't just another railway project—it's the beginning of India's transition from diesel-powered mobility to clean, hydrogen-powered innovation.
Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, this train generates electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapour as the by-product. It's a significant milestone under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and a major step towards achieving India's Net Zero 2070 vision.
With an investment of nearly ₹112 crore for the pilot and a long-term ₹5, 250 crore Hydrogen Rail Vision, Indian Railways is building a cleaner, smarter, and more self-reliant future. Beyond reducing emissions, this initiative is expected to create high-tech jobs, strengthen the Make in India ecosystem, reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, and position India among global leaders in green transportation.
